Low Carbon

BUILDING REGULATION PART L2 (2006)

Recent government legislation regarding the performance of new buildings necessitates full analysis of the building design in respect of carbon emissions and summertime overheating. This comes at a time when there is considerable economic, political and ecological pressure on reducing energy consumption and utilising energy derived from renewable sources.

Environmental Engineering Partnership, like many building professionals, are establishing in-house expertise to ensure they can provide appropriate analysis and advice on this matter, which must commence at an early stage of the building design process.

SBEM computer software is utilised to analyse buildings in respect of Approved Document L2A (2006) of the Building Regulations. This is further supported by Dynamic Simulation software that is required to properly analyse the thermal performance of a building throughout a complete year. This software is essential to analyse naturally and mixed-mode ventilated buildings and to prove Part L2A (2006) solar gain / summer temperature limits are being met.

THE LOW CARBON FUTURE

Our commitment to the advancement of knowledge in the subject of energy and sustainable building design includes the sponsorship of two members of our engineering staff on Masters degree courses in this subject at De Montfort University, Leicester.

Knowledge obtained from CPD advancement and experience on certain projects is expanding our expertise in low energy buildings, renewable energy sources and ‘micro’ power generation. This ranges from naturally ventilated buildings with summertime night-time cooling of the structure, to the incorporation of combined heat and power (CHP) plant, photo-voltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems, solar water heating and the use of biomass as a heating system fuel source.

Two of our senior staff have now qualified as Low Carbon Consultants and are included on the CIBSE register. They provide advice to clients, fellow professionals and within our own organisation.

EPC ACCREDITATION

One of our experienced members of staff is in the process of undergoing training for accreditation in respect of Energy Performance Certification.
